The Cutting Room Floor

The Gospel of Mark ends abruptly at 16:8, with the women fleeing the empty tomb in fear and silence—yet most later manuscripts include an extended ending (verses 9–20). This passage, often called “the longer ending of Mark,” summarizes post-resurrection appearances of Jesus, His commission to the disciples, and His ascension. While scholars debate its authorship, its message aligns with the rest of Scripture: the risen Christ sends His followers to proclaim the gospel to all creation, promising His power and presence as they go. This “cutting room floor” section invites us not into controversy, but into renewed confidence that the story didn’t end in fear—it moves forward in mission.
