A Little Leaven

In Mark 8:11–21, Jesus warns His disciples to “beware the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod” after they worry about forgetting to bring bread. The disciples think He is talking about physical bread, but Jesus is addressing something much deeper — the subtle and corrupting influence of unbelief, pride, and hypocrisy.

Just as a small amount of leaven works through an entire batch of dough, even a little unbelief or hardness of heart can affect our thinking, dull our spiritual perception, and keep us from recognizing Jesus’ provision and power.

This message reminds us to guard our hearts and minds, to reject the toxic mindsets of pride and skepticism, and to nurture faith that trusts Jesus to provide everything we need.
